Afraid Of Falling Over?

Falls are common in older people. One in three over 65 year olds will fall in any one year, and that that rises to one in two among the over 80s. Reduced strength, balance and speed of reaction may turn a slip, trip or stumble into a fall. But falling is not an inevitable result of growing older. While some falls are unavoidable many can be prevented. Research shows that for many people who are at high risk of falling one of the most effective interventions is strength and balance training. The Get Fit, Avoid Falls programme is designed to help people over 60 improve their strength and balance in a friendly group setting. They are held in leisure or community centres across the county from April. To find out more call Lucie Posnett on 0844 2252 403. Lucie is the Get Fit Avoid Falls Co-ordinator at Buckinghamshire Falls Prevention Team, Oakridge Centre, 240 Desborough Road, High Wycombe Bucks HP11 2QR. New Chaplain for Chesham Stags

Chesham Stags Rugby Club has appointed their first ever chaplain. Matt Coles, who came to Chesham as curate at St Mary’s Church last summer, and is a member of the Stags was recently appointed chaplain to the club. Matt said, “Despite my limited experience here, it’s clear Chesham has great people and a wonderful rugby club. While I am not brilliant at it, rugby is a great passion of mine and I have enjoyed playing for a wide range of teams from Olney to Pennsylvania, to Selwyn College Cambridge where I trained to be a vicar. I came to faith through an organization called Christians in Sport some ten years ago and since then, have enjoyed helping churches and Christians as they pray for sporting friends; honouring God in the way I play and ‘being about’ to say something of the Good News of Jesus Christ. Sports Chaplaincy is primarily aimed at the care and welfare of players, club members and family members. Chaplaincy is not just for those who share the same faith convictions and it is definitely not about imposing the Chaplain’s beliefs on others. The Chaplain is expected to demonstrate integrity, work professionally, care sensitively and maintain confidentiality. Specifically, this is acquaintance, being, care (bereavement, injury), development (after sport), events (weddings, baptisms), formality (Remembrance, Christmas) and God. Chaplains should be pastorally proactive, but spiritually reactive – ensuring they don’t impose their beliefs on others. Divine intervention on results, however, is not the Chaplain’s role.”

Tennis for Your Toddler from 23 Feb

Tailored to the needs of younger children, Little Aces will bring the joy of tennis to children as young as 18 months in the Chesham and Amersham area. Combining the use of specialised equipment with fun activities, Little Aces aims to develop movement, balance and coordination, the skills children need for tennis and many other sports. Run by local tennis coaches Simon Dunford and James Goodchild, the Little Aces programme uses slower moving balls such as balloon or foam balls and hand paddles take the place of racquets for younger children. The lessons support the key stage of learning including counting, colours, basic shapes, story-telling, communication and learning to play with others. Founder Simon Dunford said, “We’ve found that, given the right equipment and programme children much younger than the usual age at which tennis is introduced, can already start to develop skills. Moreover they can begin to enjoy this amazing game. Little Aces hopes to encourage more junior players into tennis and sport in general so that they can develop into healthy, happy children and hopefully stay with a game they can then play for the rest of their lives. Who knows, we may even discover the next Andy Murray.” Little Aces programmes will be starting in Chesham from Tuesday 23 February at the White Hill Centre. Lessons for 18 months to two and a half year-olds run from 11.15am to noon and two and a half to four year-olds from 12.15 to 1pm. In Amersham from Friday 26 February at Amersham Common Village Hall there will be lessons for 18 months to 2 and a half year-olds running from 10.15 to 11am with 2 and a half to 4 year-olds from 11.15am to noon. Call Simon Dunford on 07776 442880 or email simon@tenniszone.co.uk. See previous piece Wednesday, 13 January 2010, Little Aces.

Chesham Rugby Club Minis and Juniors News

Chesham Stags Minis rugby side were selected to take part in a Pride in Unity parade preceding the Saracens versus Worcester rugby union match at Wembley Stadium on Saturday 13 February. The Stags Minis, from the under seven and under eight teams, parade on the Wembley pitch before the match under the Stag’s club banner. Boom dacca dacca boom dacca dac boom boom boom

‘Boom dacca boom dacca boom boom’ sings out from a row of African djembe drums (those ones with a tight skin on the top decorated traditionally down the sides) topped by a selection of eager learners. Expressions are wrapt - grinning, slack jawed, frowning. Eager student Ann Worrall said, “How I would love to have a camera (and a free hand) to record those faces of concentration. Jo our teacher, slight of build, smiling and capable of enormous noise with the smallest effort, sits before us. She shows us small rhythms, banging them out together until it sits easily. Then another rhythm is learned and practiced. We sit and play and start to feel we look and sound the part. Then the first rhythm slips back in and we alternate as we wish. Ah, the mouth opens – you really have to go inwards and concentrate on your own rhythm and not that of others, but in time, if the sound is to be good. Hands seem to have a life of their own and we glimpse a wonderful beat resounding around the room. You relax and think you have it, but the hands can let you down and you lose it. Grinning, the group carries you along as you start again.” Ann continued, “My Thursday evening drumming class at the White Hill centre is a little oasis. Everything else is forgotten in the beat and the group. Men and women of varied ages, backgrounds, abilities learning together and chilling out for a couple of hours without the use of technology, alcohol, or complicated equipment. It’s great. Why don’t you join us and try it out?” Booking is essential call Jo May on 07973 721260 email jo@zoox.co.uk. Sessions are on Thursdays from 8 -10pm at the White Hill Centre and there are Sunday afternoon family sessions.

Chesham United Trust Sponsored Walk

The Supporters' Trust is organising another sponsored walk to raise money for the club and they always pick a local good cause to share the proceeds 50:50. Dave Jeffrey said, “Previously we have raised money for Iain Rennie and Heritage House but this year we would like to support the Veterans Re-Build Fund”. The walk is planned for Saturday 27 February. Dave continued, “We will walk from Chesham United to Leighton Town (Leighton Buzzard) for our league match. We reckon it will be about 20 miles and plan to walk over to Berkhamsted and then follow the Grand Union Canal towpath. We have about 15 already signed up to walk - anyone else is welcome to join in for all or part of the way. In the past we have had kids joining in by cycling which could also be an option along the towpath. Anyone is welcome to join for all or part of the route including cyclists. We also hope to have a support barge for this walk." If you would like to join in send an email to Dave Jeffrey djeffrey@gotadsl.co.uk (I’ve not been given a contact number). Remember the worthy cause - supporting the Chesham Veterans Fund which is raising money to re-build the British Legion after the May 2009 fire.

Samaritans Battle Through Snow to Keep Amersham Branch Open

As you know, the Chilterns has had to deal with some extreme weather over the last month or so. Snow and ice have bought whole neighbourhoods to a standstill and closed schools and businesses. But through all this, the volunteers of the Samaritans in Amersham have ensured that the branch has stayed open – to be there to talk to anyone in distress or despair, or experiencing feelings of suicide. If you would like to find out about the work of the Samaritans, and the team of volunteers who will go to any lengths to make sure there is always someone to answer the phone, email Catherine Eyres on catherine.eyres@gmail.com and she can arrange for you to have a chat to Gill Owen-Conway, Director of the Chiltern Samaritans.

Don’t Worry

Concerns about money, health and relationships are the top worries for people in the South East in 2009. Chiltern Samaritans urges people to not let worries spiral out of control and to seek support for emotional distress this Christmas and during 2010. More than half the population in the South East (53%) has worried about debt and money, according to a survey published by Samaritans and YouGov, with a quarter of people (25%) describing 2009 as bad or their worst year ever. The poll of more than 2,000 people across the UK asked the public to identify their five biggest worries over the past year. After money, other top-five sources of anxiety for people in the South East were physical health concerns (reported by 34% of people) and problems in relationships with family and friends (33%), followed by fears about job security (28%) and domestic politics (27%). Gill Owen-Conway, Director of Chiltern Samaritans said, “In the last year, Samaritans received five million calls and many of them were about the worries in this survey, with one in every ten linked to finance. Sharing your troubles can be a relief and is often the first step to finding a way of coping. Samaritans’ trained volunteers are available 24/7 to offer confidential support to anyone feeling anxious, unhappy or distressed this Christmas and throughout the coming year.”Call Chiltern Samaritans on 01494 432000 or use the national number 08457 90 90 90, or the branch in Amersham at 149 Station Road is open between 10am and 10pm, seven days a week for people who would rather talk through their worries face-to-face. Trevor Collins’ name lives on

Brenda Collins has been busy since her husband sadly died at the age of 63 in July last year. She has set up the Trevor Collins Foundation to save the lives of people with bowel cancer. People need to be aware that faecal occult blood test (FOB) tests are not reliable. Although better than nothing, they can give false negatives. FOB tests do not pick up every form of bowel cancer and Brenda is calling for more effective NHS screening. Meanwhile she advises people not to wait for the NHS and to have regular checks. In the USA this means a colonoscopy every five years. The Trevor Collins Foundation has just received formal registration and has raised £35,000 already. Brenda said, “We would now like to offer our services to any bowel cancer patient or their family, if they are in need of some help, guidance or counselling. We would also like to put our message out there as someone may be prepared to organise some fund raising activity for us or simply make a donation.” Call Brenda on 01494 786827 or email brenda@belmonthouse.net. Keep note of your drinks

Did you know that the Government's maximum recommended daily amount of alcohol is two to three units for a woman and three to four units for a man? That’s the equivalent of one pint of 5% lager. Caroline Murray, Community Safety Officer at Chiltern District Council said that on Monday 19 October for Alcohol Awareness Week, they will have a stand inside the entrance to Sainsbury’s in Chesham between noon and 4pm. Chiltern’s Community Safety Partnership is supporting the Government’s Know Your Limits campaign, which is encouraging people across the country to take stock of how much they are drinking by keeping a drink diary for the week. Information about alcohol units and drink diaries will be available for residents to take away so they can monitor their own alcohol intake. Representatives from Chiltern District Council’s Community Safety Team, Thames Valley Police, Young Addiction and Buckinghamshire Road Safety Team will be available to offer advice. Call Caroline on 07711 042399 or email caroline.murray@chiltern.gov.uk.

Keeping on swimming

Chesham outdoor heated swimming pool will be open during October. The Friends of Chesham Moor Gym and Swim have been awarded a grant of £3,000 from Bucks Sports Make a Splash initiative. The last time the swimming season extended to the end of October was in the summer of 2006. Since then, the Council was not convinced that the extra month of swimming would break even financially - but now it can. Extended opening hours are popular, one swimmer said, “It is lovely - sometimes you’re swimming in the dark, although of course there are lights”. Town Clerk Bill Richards is adept at finding funding. He said, “Since the government excluded town and parishes from the over 60s and under 16s swimming initiative, we have been struggling to offer our loyal, regular users a reward for their continued support. Thanks to this grant we are now able to respond positively and satisfy demand”.
The gym down at The Moor is also increasingly popular for fitness with membership numbers going up - during the summer there were 209 new members. You can just go for sessions (after your induction) - you don’t have to sign up for a term. To find out more visit www.cheshammoorfitness.org.uk or call 01494 776975.

About 70 riders attended with their horses, to try negotiating 36 jumps set out over a six mile course, all in beautiful countryside. The weather was perfect, and the ground not too hard. It was a great success and raised funds for the eradication of polio and other Rotary charities. Happy 103 year old

Hilda Flello has lived in Chesham all her life – and that’s a long time. Last week she celebrated her 103rd birthday with friends and family at Atlas House, her sheltered accommodation home of 16 years. Alison Hadden, CEO of Paradigm Housing which manages Atlas House, took Hilda a cake and stayed for tea to chat about the old days. Hilda has an excellent memory and remembers her childhood as the middle child in a family of five girls and two boys. She also remembers Britain at war with Germany in 1914, and the loss of the Titanic. Hilda met her husband Stan when she worked in a sweet shop on Chesham High Street and he worked nearby as a post office engineer. He came into the shop – and kept coming back. Hilda said, “I made him wait two years before we got married. We enjoyed more than 40 happy years together and have one daughter, Margaret”. Stan worked for Bomber Command during the Second World War and was a founder member of the Chesham Camera Club.

Councillors on the climbing frame?

If you see a crowd gathered at the refurbished play area in Lowndes Park on Friday 7 August at 11 am it will be the official opening. We reported it completed and added a photo later. The opening will be conducted by the mayor Cllr Justine Fulford. Representatives from other councils who have contributed will be there including Cllrs Noel Brown and Marion Clayton from Buckinghamshire County Council (BCC), and Mimi Harker from Chiltern District Councillor (CDC) as will David Gardner from CDC. This is the first stage of Chesham Town Council’s commitment to improve all its play areas over the next few years. Thanks to a £50,000 grant from the government’s Play Builder scheme (allocated through the District and County Council), a whole range of play equipment designed for the four -14 years age group has been installed by Proludic Play Ltd. Parents and young people were consulted before the design was given the go-ahead, and it was chosen for both its play value and robustness.

WaW town initiative

Phil Folly of Chesham Environmental Group is leading on a project to make Chesham a Walkers Are Welcome town. WaW towns and villages are places which have something special to offer walkers. Thirty-one towns and villages across Britain have joined this new community-led scheme, demonstrating commitment to making the walker’s visit enjoyable. Obtaining Walkers are Welcome status gives a town a reputation as a place for visitors to come to enjoy the outdoors, which in turn benefits the local economy, contributes to tourism and regeneration strategies. WaW membership also allows communities networking opportunities with other WaW towns, where experiences are shared informally and new ideas discussed. Most towns or villages with WaW status are in the north of England or Scotland. Some Chesham residents thought that as the Chilterns hills are a lovely part of country, with plenty of path and bridleway walks, situated 25 miles from the country's capital, we should try to become a WaW town. Phil is confident that Chesham will be able to fulfil the criteria, one of which is demonstrating local support. To do this the Environmental Group needs to obtain 500 residents’ signatures. Oxfam, Lucia's, Millets, the Drawingroom and Starbucks have already taken a petition so that residents of Chesham and the villages can sign. Call Phil on 01494 783691 or email follypostman@aol.com. The web site address for Walkers Are Welcome is www.walkersarewelcome.org.uk.

There is a good value play scheme going on at the Moor Gym and Swim, Moor Road HP5 1SE this holiday. There are still spaces left and I can report that the mayor, Cllr Justine Fulford’s children Cicely and Samuel really enjoyed their go on Wednesday. Justine said, “It gave me ample time to work and even managing to fit a trip to Waitrose in before picking them up.” It is for kids aged between seven and 11 years who enjoy being active and includes football, kwikcricket, netball, basketball, swimming and rounders. Arrive at 9.30am and the day lasts until 4pm so take a packed lunch. It costs £15 per day or £50 if pre-booking for a week and runs until Friday 4 September. Be prepared - now is the time to choose your Flu friend

Buckinghamshire NHS PCT (Primary Care Trust) Patient and Public Involvement reminds us that the national swine flu information leaflet, delivered to households across the county in May, makes reference to people setting up a network of flu friends. They could be relatives, neighbours or friends who will collect medicines, food and other supplies if you get swine flu, so that you do not have to leave home. Preventing people who may be suffering from swine flu from having to go outdoors will help restrict the potential spread of flu to others. It is a good idea for each person to identify up to five ‘flu friends’ because if your flu friend is also ill or unavailable then you have alternatives, but it is important to have at least one. A flu friend form is available on Buckinghamshire PCT’s website www.buckspct.nhs.uk to help you record your flu friends’ information and to keep in a safe place in case they are ill. People should also consider becoming a flu friend to a neighbour who may live alone, family members that might need help, or offer themselves through networks that may be set up by local organisations, such as churches or parish councils.
Advice for people who have flu-like symptoms, is to stay at home, limit contact with others and check your symptoms by calling NHS Direct on 0845 4647, visit www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk or www.pandemicflu.direct.gov.uk. Once symptoms are checked you will be given advice on the next steps to take if you are diagnosed with the virus. For further information on swine flu you can ring the Swine Flu information line on 0800 1 513 513. You are urged not to visit your GP surgery or a hospital, as you may spread germs to others. (I thought it was important to take your temperature-Ed.)

Phoenix from Kaizen

Phoenix is the name of a new health club which will open its doors on the premises of the old Kaizen. Many townspeople and members of Kaizen were disappointed when it was closed - we reported it on Wednesday, 15 October 2008. Local people Ken Gooley and Alan Soldini have been in lengthy negotiation and due diligence (not to mention legal fees) to acquire the venue and reopen the popular centrally placed healthy workout centre. It will be run with the same family friendly inclusion ethic and will maintain the 30 minute workout circuit. The other good news is that Jenny Lees, Heather and Jon will be returning as well. The opening date of Phoenix will be Monday 27 July. Do spread the word and phone 01494 810075, to support these enterprising locals and register your interest to join. Good luck to these enterprising Cheshamites.

Exercise watchers

On Monday 29 June at Chesham Moor Gym & Swim, a new class is starting to help people become motivated to exercise. The class itself does not involve exercise, and can be done in your lunch hour, as it runs from 12.45 - 1.15pm every Monday. It is put on by Jonathan Popple of JJP Training who said, “Personal training is no longer a luxury for just the rich and famous. You are never too old to start exercise and improve your quality of life”. You will receive a brief exercise-related talk and be set individual tasks to complete before the next meeting. The level at which the tasks are set will depend on your fitness levels. The class allows you to meet up with your own personal trainer on a weekly basis, and ask advice on aspects of exercise and fitness training you are confused about. It costs £4 per week - a small cost that could make a big difference to your future. If you (or your friends or colleagues) are interested, please call 0775 33409 84 or email j@jjptraining.co.uk.

Twenty years bowled past

The Chesham Pioneers Bowls Club has been celebrating its 20th anniversary. The Ken Kenny Annual Tournament was an opportunity to invite those organisations which have given donations or grants to Chesham Pioneers, to watch the talented bowlers in action at Chesham Bowling Club. Pioneers bowling members are all visually impaired and are assisted by a small number of sighted helpers. The club is affiliated to Chesham Bowling Club for bowling during the summer and bowl short mat at the White Hill Centre in the winter months. It operates under the auspices of the Bucks Vision, but runs its activities independently. Although there were some heavy showers Brenda King tells me everyone had a good day and enjoyed the lunch. For more information call Brenda on 01494 774249.

Chiltern Voice Amersham – Henry Wizgier: Goodnight Walk

The charity-walk season is in full swing and this Saturday 6 June sees the Goodnight Walk, an 11 mile sponsored trek which takes place around the streets of Amersham, through the night. It is on behalf of the Iain Rennie Hospice At Home and over 1,000 participants, mainly women, are expected to take part. The event starts at the Amersham and Chiltern Rugby Club which is in Weedon Lane, Chesham Bois, at midnight. It will follow well-lit paths taking in most of Amersham and Little Chalfont’s main roads. Visit www.gnwalk.com. Volunteer stewards and other helpers are still welcome, phone Kerri Coote, Community Fundraiser on 01442 890222 or email gnwalk@irhh.org. Facebook users who have an account and would like to donate, there is a facility on the site for the first time.
Last Saturday, the original night-walk took place in London, the famous Moonwalk which is a fund-raiser for cancer charities and is mainly for women. For the third year running (or should that be walking?) Amersham’s Gloria Haynes completed the course – in 6 hours 45 minutes. Gloria’s total sponsorship fund in aid of breast cancer currently stands at £502.05 and should anyone want to add a pound or two, it can still be done

Sports people successes from Chesham & Amersham Chiltern Sports

Awards are a joint venture between Chiltern District Council and Chiltern District Sports Council to recognise exceptional amateur achievement in sport through outstanding personal, team or school performance. Awards also recognise long and outstanding voluntary service to sport by an individual as an administrator, organiser or coach. Each of the winners either lives, trains, belongs to a sports club or attends full-time education in the Chiltern District area, and we report here from Chesham and Amersham. The 15th Annual Chiltern Awards for Achievement in Sport saw award winners, their families and guests packing the Chiltern District Council Chamber in Amersham to hear the stories behind each of the winners. The service to sport award went to Martyn Cartwright, a founder member of Chiltern Harriers Athletic Club in 1978, who has over the last 31 years coached many junior and senior members whilst also competing himself. Other winners from Chesham were: Under 15 Boys Award – Michael Goddard, 800m and 1500m runner with Chiltern Harriers; Girls 15 - 21 Award – Clarice Underwood from Great Missenden, a 100m sprinter with Chiltern Harriers; Primary School of the Year – Chartridge Combined with teams successfully representing the school in football, tag-rugby and cross-country; Secondary School of the Year – Dr Challoners High School whose cross-country team won the English schools cross-country cup; and Community Team of the Year won by the Chesham Cricket Club’s Under Elevens team who won the Bucks Cricket Board under 11 league.

Swim in the sunshine

Speaking of the outdoor pool – Chesham Moor Gym and Swim (to give it its correct title) was officially declared open last weekend and on a wonderful warm sunny day. The mayor Cllr Alison Pirouet was accompanied by young people from the Chesham Youth Council when she jumped in. Photography of children at the pool is forbidden so we cannot show you the big splash but the young people also tried the multi-courts after Alison had cut the ribbon to open the refurbishment. Tennis will be much fairer there now the ball can’t land on a crack. There is an enormous new inflatable with an Olympic theme designed by the manager Danny Essex. Did you know that the snack bar serves home-made food? The chocolate brownie is delicious. The cafe is open after school and at weekends so you know your young sportspeople will be eating nutritiously if they have a long session of exercise. Opening hours are Mondays and Wednesdays 7.30am – 9pm, Tuesday and Thursday 8am - 9pm, Friday 7.30am – 10pm, Saturday 9am - 6pm and Sunday 9am – 5pm. Visit www.cheshammoorfitness.org.uk/ or call 01494 776975.

Chesham High combats digital exclusion

A Silver Surfers Day for adult learners will be held at Chesham High School on Friday 15 May from 10am - 12.30pm as part of Adult Education Week. Digital Unite and Paradigm Housing consider it one of the flagship national events for Silver Surfers, and it will be opened by the mayor Cllr Alison Pirouet. Using technology can improve quality of life, access to information and a wider range of leisure pursuits. It can bring people closer to family and friends. Statistics show that eight out of ten people over 50 are affected by digital exclusion. Computer skills are second nature to today’s young people but intergenerational contact is something that is often missing from their lives. Jean Metcalfe, a Silver Surfer in her 80s from a Paradigm sheltered scheme, has been able to contact, send photos and arrange family visits with relations in Cornwall and Canada through emails as a result of Information Technology (IT) training. Chris Morris, a CHS sixth former and Chesham resident, runs computer surgeries at Cromwell House with three others. He says the only contact he has with the older generation is once a year at Christmas with grandparents. Dr Siobhan Bygate, Community Coordinator Humanities at Chesham High School said, “We have decided to bridge this technological and intergenerational gap”. A group of Year Nines will take total beginners through the steps of basic computer use, emails and surfing the net. Using Webcams and a large screen, participants in the IT class are invited to stay on for a short classroom debate on intergenerational issues with pupils from CHS’s partner schools: Brenu Junior High School, Brenu, Ghana and Lycee Pierre D’Ailly, Compeigne, Paris. Senior citizens from Paradigm, COPAG, Compeigne and village elders from Brenu will join in. It is a major innovation for the Ghana partner because the school does not even have electricity. Instead, a Chesham run charity called SABRE Trust, with offices near Brenu, is bussing old and young alike to its technology centre for the event. The IT class and webcaming event on Friday 15 May will run in two shifts from 10 - 11.30am and from 11 - 12.30pm. If you are old enough and interested in participating call Siobhan on 01494 782854 ext 247, or email sbygate@cheshamhigh.bucks.sch.uk to book a place for one of the two slots on Friday morning.

Into the saddle for his challenging year

Gordon O’Neill is multifaceted and a master of the media. Now managing director of Bucks business iotaMEDIA, he has variously been in the Merchant Navy, a chef for nuns and a Baptist minister, to name but a few of his endeavors. He pops up everywhere in Chesham and has set himself a Challenging Year as he approaches 50 to improve his fitness and learn different skills. He plans a charity bike ride from Brighton to London. The distance is 52.7 miles and the date for his endurance test will be Sunday 24 May. Online blog confessions are revealing - “this is about 52 miles longer than I have ever ridden before” and video evidence of retrieving an old bike from the shed, be assured that the challenge is, most definitely, on. Gordon is challenging us to challenge him. The search for equipment, personal training and sponsorship is underway. With a facebook group nearing three figures, a twitter following and regular readership of the blog, foundations of support and intrigue are in place. What makes his venture unusual is that Gordon’s video production expertise allows followers to be involved every step of the way. Call Sophie Cole to make a suggestion for an up and coming challenge on 07793 768877, visit or the main website http://www.mychallengingyear.com/ or email sophie@iotamedia.co.uk.
