Quilt ‘What Chesham Means to Me’, But Who Knows of an Old Building Society Quilt?

Church2 Community is undertaking a project to produce a piece of textile art – a quilt, with the community of Chesham. They are working with a number of groups; it is intergenerational and is bringing in the minority communities as well. The name of the project is What Chesham Means to Me. The aim is to have it completed by the Jubilee and for it to be displayed that weekend. Jan Longhurst the Community Worker for Church2Community at the Chesham Methodist Church in Bellingdon Road Chesham HP5 2HA said, ‘It might be an opportunity to have an exhibition over the Jubilee weekend in the Church building, of Chesham related quilts and banners that have been done by groups or communities in Chesham. We are not looking to do a general quilt display of old quilts. This is because the local group of the Quilters Guild of the British Isles, Region 7 (Beds, Bucks, Herts and Northants) are already doing such a project aimed at getting together the old quilts in Buckinghamshire and displaying them at Bletchley Park on the weekend of Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 February 2012.’

The idea of the exhibition in Chesham over the Jubilee Weekend is still in the embryo stage. Jan wants to see if there are enough community quilts and banners out there in Chesham, probably sewn by Women’s Institute groups, churches or youth groups, to make up an exhibition. Do let Jan know if you have any information. Call Jan on 01494 785956 or 07795 180404 or email church2community@hotmail.com .

It is thought that a double bed sized quilt was made for the anniversary of the Chesham Building Society but since it was sold on, the people there now have no knowledge of it.

Your editor is impressed with the tapestry in the Town Hall Council Chamber, but that is another story (see below).
