Guerrilla Gardeners Transform Sirsy Dinx on St Mary’s Way

You may have noticed the gardens at the old Sirsy Dinx site diagonally opposite the Chesham Cottage Chinese restaurant on St Mary’s Way. Your editor has been trying to find out who managed the miracle. It was Vanessa Scola and a friend who set about making an attractive space on the waste ground and transformed it to a garden. Vanessa said, ‘We wanted to do something to cheer up Chesham and so we decided to make the site into a beautiful garden space – really making something out of nothing. We asked companies to provide plants and bark chippings and also put down some of our own plants. It took us at least nine days of work and now we are really happy. We will continue to tend it as necessary. This was our contribution. We hope that people get as much enjoyment from the site as we did planning and creating it‘.

Your editor remembers asking Sirsy Dinx if they would clear up that ground before the Chesham In Bloom judging and receiving an unequivocal refusal, back in 2007. I was glad when they left, much as I lament empty premises. Thankyou Vanessa. Rumour has it that Rosemary Main is the other secret gardener. Rosemary’s a Friend of Lowndes Park and a member of the Environmental Group. I think the struggling polluted border beds along the Great Wall of St Mary’s roadside received the attentions of Rosemary last year.

Vanessa, a qualified horticulturist, with experience of gardening at both Ashridge College and Hughenden Manor, runs her own business Simply Gardening, in Chesham. As well as horticulture she creates hanging baskets throughout the year and she makes mosaic pots and garden accessories. To be shown Vanessa’s work call 07944 868209..
