Chesham 4 Fairtrade www.chesham4fairtrade.co.uk will be hanging out the bunting to raise awareness of Fairtrade Fortnight at noon on Saturday 5 March 2011 in the Market Square, near the Chesham Fairtrade Town sign. Everyone is invited but the time is not specified. What’s more, the flags are Fairtrade cotton bunting, decorated by local businesses and supporters. Businesses who are lending their support include Care Chairs, Cole Flatt, JPS, Blue Haze, Turner & Browning, Pearces, Harvey Johns, Lucia’s, the Drawingroom, Murrays Accounting, Short Couture and Fast Break. Also flagged up are: Trinity and Broadway Baptist Churches, Chesham Quakers, United Reformed Church and the Chesham Methodists together with schools namely: Ley Hill, Thomas Harding and Chesham Grammar. The Reverend Colin Cartwright said, “There should be enough bunting to stretch a fair way along the High Street. Come along and see”.
The theme for Fairtrade Fortnight 2011 is Show Off Your Label to promote the use of Fairtrade cotton. This helps disadvantaged cotton farmers in countries such as India. Getting a fair price for their cotton enables these farmers to invest in their businesses and provide an education for their children. Chesham is particularly keen to show off its label this year, as it has been awarded Fairtrade Town Status for the sixth consecutive year.
