Chesham Heritage Open Day – It’s Your Town

The Chesham Society is proud to present Heritage Open Day Weekend from Friday 10 September 2010. The first building which will be open free for you to look at is Trinity Baptist Church in Red Lion Street. Go on Friday 10 September from 3 to 5pm for a children’s treasure hunt, or later from 7 to 9pm. On Saturday 11 September as part of the launch of Walkers are Welcome (WaW), there will a nine mile walk along part of Sir Edward’s Watkin’s (1919-1901) proposed railway track from Manchester to Paris. Most of the Heritage openings are on Sunday 12 September. At 10am visit the Bury and its grounds in Church Street, open until 5pm. Take a conducted tour of the house, and see displays of the 1841 Town Tithe Map together with associated legal property documents, pictures of old Chesham, and access to the lovely gardens. The Cemetery in Bellingdon Road also opens at 10am until 3pm and you can see the attractive Mortuary Chapel and the Hearse House. Opposite is the Mosque, open from 10am to 4.30pm, which has a beautiful dome with striking green interior decoration.

Weylands House in Germain Street opens from 10am to 5pm. It is one half of the Chesham’s original Work House, now an attractive home with interesting features. The small quiet gardens of Weedon Arms Houses are open from 10am to 4.30pm associated with the 17th century alms houses and still being used as such.

Opening at 11am is Chesham Bois House gardens until 4pm, a short drive outside Chesham. Although there is not full access to the house, visitors will be able to look in and see through the front doors a beautiful unique curved staircase. Teas will be available. Also opening at 11am will be the Museum.

Next to open will be Mathews Brick Yard in Bellingdon, open from 1pm to 4pm with hourly guided tours. It is a working brickyard. St Mary’s Church, off Church Street, the oldest building in Chesham, opens from 2 to 5pm and offers unique be tours of the clock tower. Tea and cakes will be available. Trinity Baptist Church in Red Lion Street will be open again from 4 to 6pm.
