Amersham WEA

Amersham WEA is also patronized by Chesham people and Myra Ottley of Lye Green is secretary. She tells us about the Autumn programme. The course starting on Monday 15 September at 10am, is called A Changing Society – Aspects of English Social History in the 18th and 19th Centuries. It runs for seven weeks and explores the enormous impact of the Industrial Revolution. Using contemporary documents and images, the course will consider the changes and look at people’s attitudes to child labour, poverty, education, working conditions and the role of women. It will be held at the Amersham Community Centre in Chiltern Avenue, Amersham HP6 5AH and costs £49, call Myra on 01494 782179.
The other offering in Amersham is Creative Writing at Hervines Pavilion, Hervines Road HP6 5HU. It runs for 10 weeks from Tuesday 16 September at 10am for £68. The workshop sessions offer life writing, short stories or novels, drama and poetry.
The Friday course at the Amersham Community Centre running for 10 weeks, will be Global Power in Historical Perspective. Empires are out of fashion - the United Nations recognises some 190 more or less free nation states. Imperial power has shaped the world’s history but today’s trouble-spots reflect old imperial fault-lines, and the ambitions of China or Russia or the United States. The course starts at 10.30am on Friday 19 September, call Myra on 01494 782179.
