ID system isn’t ideal
Despite the cold wet January night the Quaker Meeting House in Amersham was well filled for the talk on ID cards and the Database. Speaker Elizabeth Burgess covered the issues and technology as well as the dangers for the security of the system from overly wide access if ID cards are to be used routinely. The audience was surprised to learn that in government trials a significant proportion of people could not even be properly enrolled because they couldn’t provide the biometrics required. Of those that could enrol, some could not verify their identity immediately afterwards, and there were particular problems for the disabled, minority ethnic groups and the elderly. Also surprising to many was the relative ease with which digital fingerprint systems can be fooled by fake 'fingerprints'.
